The capital and largest city of Spain is Madrid – its residents being called Madrilenos. It hugs the Manzanares River. Because of its thriving economy Madrid is said to be centre of the entire Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish monarch resides in Madrid. The city is unique because it is an amalgam of modern times with the grace of tradition. The places of interest include the Royal Palace and Teatro Real, the Buen Retiro Park of 1631, the National Library of 1732, the Prado Museum amongst many others. Since 1975 Spain has been integrated into the family of European nations and playing a dominant role in finance. Madrid is one of the power centres of Europe. The climate is Mediterranean with comparatively cold winters.

Northeast of the centre of the capital is Madrid Barajas International Airport (MAD) – the most important entry port into Spain, the Iberian Peninsula and southern Europe. It has come a long way since it made its debut in 1928. In 2006, 45 million passengers have been recorded to have touched Madrid airport. It is the centre and the base of Iberia Airlines. The Madrid Barcelona air route is the busiest in the world. Terminal 4 is one of the largest in the world. Planned illumination, use of glass walls and domed arcades allow the inflow of natural light. Madrid airport now has four runways allowing for simultaneous departure and arrivals of planes. Sky Team, Star Alliance and Air Europe operate from the first three terminals while Iberia Airlines and its ancillary units use Terminal 4. There is direct metro link from the airport to the city. Plans are afoot for linking it with high-speed trains.

For travel weary passengers hungry for luxurious comfort there are many hotels close to Madrid airport. High Tech Madrid Aeropuerto is a start hotel with 86 guest rooms/suits each fitted with hydro-massage showers. The rooms have air conditioners, mini bars, safes, cable and satellite televisions, direct dial phone facilities, high-speed Internet etc. The reception is open round the clock. There are also meeting and show rooms with latest conveniences. Another fairy tale address near Madrid Hotel is Express by Holiday Inn.
