Munich Airport Hotels

The gamma city of Munich is in Germany and is the capital of Bavaria State. It ranks third in Germany after Berlin and Hamburg. Munich hugs the River Isar. The word Munich is an adaptation of an archaic German term for ‘monk’. Munich lies on a high land north of the northern edge of the Alps. The city enjoys a continental climate with heavy rainstorms. Day and night temperatures greatly vary. Winters are very cold. Today it is global city having the headquarters of top companies and hosts many international trade fairs.

Munich International Airport (Franz Josef Strauss International Airport) is 28 km northeast from the heart of the city. As regards passenger traffic Munich ranks second in Germany and 30th in the world. In 2007 it was ranked the ‘Best Airport in Europe’ for the third consecutive time. Munich airport took off from 1992 by replacing the one in Munich-Riem. Construction was started in the village of Franzheim.

Munich airport gives relief to the overburdened Frankfurt Airport. Franz Straus was a popular politician being once a prime minister of Bavaria. He was also a pilot and it was under his aegis that the airport was planned. It has two runways but a third is now being planned although that is running into rough weather because of local opposition. There are two terminals at Munich airport apart from a general Aviation Terminal for the private and corporate sector.

Munich airport is well connected by train, bus and taxi. A direct magnetic levitation train will soon connect the airport with the city centre. Terminal 1 houses most of the non-Star airlines having 60 stands and 14 boarding stations. Terminal 2 is exclusively for Star as well as the partners of Lufthansa. It boasts of 2 halls, 75 parking stands and 47 boarding stations. Opened in 2003 it can handle 20 to 25 million passengers annually.

To bed and rest following arrival and departure there are many top class hotels near Munich airport. Movenpick Hotel Munich is only 8 minutes from the airport and 30 km from the city centre. The river and an industrial park are close by. It is a treat to sip Munich brewed beer in the beer garden or relax in one of the many guest rooms.  Another alternative is the Kempinski Hotel Airport Munich. It is within walking distance of the terminals having all the best in hotel comfort that the world can offer.
