El Paso is the sixth largest Texas City and ranks twenty second in USA. The Franklin Mountains divide the city into two sections. There are traces of thousands of years of human settlement in El Paso – being home to the Mestizo culture and roaming Mescalero Apache bands. Next it was the turn of Spain to leave her signature on the history of El Paso. Since 1848 American traders and trappers began to make it their home. In 1861 it became a part of the American Confederacy.
From 1881 the railways made El Paso into a boom city. The valleys were green and the climate was perfect round the year. El Paso saw a sea change from the roaring 20’s to the World War II. Business and events saw the setting up of hotels (Hilton), airlines (Continental Airlines) and theatres (Plaza) together with Cold War activities and rocket programmers. Immigrants from Mexico to pick a share in copper and oil industries. El Paso began to rapidly expand. Development marched hand in hand with problems and tensions. The changing River Rio Grande added to complexities. It now demarcates the country from Mexico. El Paso, with its semi arid warm steppe climate has hot summers and mild dry winters and is surrounded by Chuhuahuan desert. It is subject to occasional flooding and devastating storms.
