Fort Worth : The name Fort Worth is associated with the wild west of America – cowboys and rodeos. With a population of about 624,067 and covering an area of 300 square miles it ranks fifth among the large cities in Texas and is the county seat of Tarrant. It is the 19th largest city in USA. Popularly known as ‘Cowtown’ Fort Worth, is proudly more rustic than its neighbor, Dallas with celebrations held in honor of its heritage.
Fort Worth was born as military camp in 1849 taking its name from General W.J.Worth. When the Mexican-American war came to an end a fort was set up on a high point where the West and Clear Forks of the Trinity River meet. The main idea was to protect the first settlers from Indian attacks. In due course it grew into a busy town on the famous Chisholm Trail. Thousands and thousands of cattle were driven along this trail to markets in the north. Soon it became the centre of the ranching industry. Fort Worth became happy hunting grounds for gambling parlors, salons and dancing joints. The Civil War toned down prosperity for sometime but with the coming of the Texas and Pacific Railway things began to look up once again. Fort Worth became a prime centre for trading in livestock. The boom started with the gushing out of oil – it was a dizzy era of wheeling and dealing. The fortunes of Fort Worth again took a dip when an F2 Tornado lashed through it. Today there are art museums apart from a Cowgirl Museum, the only one of its kind in the world, dedicated to brave women of America’s West. Fort Worth has a science and history museum as well as an equestrian and entertainment centre. Fort Worth has a humid subtropical climate where temperatures vary from the very high to minus degrees in winter accompanied by light snowfall. It is a relatively safe city. Visiting Fort Worth?
