Arlington is located in Tarrant County, Texas. The city was named after the Arlington House of General Robert E. Lee. It was first a farming and cotton gin in 1884. The public school system was founded in 1910 together with the telephone, water, natural gas and electricity service. Before World War II, the population grew from 3, 031 to over four thousand. General Motors as the first large scale industrialization together with automotive and aerospace development in 1954 started the growth rate of population in the area. Six Flags over Texas was opened during Tom Vandergriff service as Mayor. When the Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) Airport opened in 1974, it also contributed in the city’s population growth. In 1972, the Washington Senators baseball team moved to Arlington and played as Texas Rangers.
