Lucy the Elephant – Lucy was built by James Lafferty in 1881 as a publicity stunt to grab the attention of potential investors of his land holdings along the South Atlantic City coast. Obviously many people were attracted to it, to the extent that the Presidents and Royalties came from around the world to witness Lucy. In 1976 Lucy the Elephant was designated as one of the National Historic Landmarks in the country because it is the oldest example of zoomorphic architecture. Today, Lucy stands as one of the most popular site in the city. Also known as “The World’s Largest Elephant.”
